Identification microchips
First ensure that the horse or pony has not been previously microchipped.
1
Scan the horse thoroughly over the neck, on both sides, in patterns parallel and perpendicular to mane, to ensure no microchip is found.
2
Scan the microchip in the sealed pack to verify the 15-digit number matches the barcode label.
3
Implantation site is on the left side of the neck, halfway between the poll and withers, 5 to 10 cm underneath the mane.
4
Area of implantation can be shaved before aseptically preparing site for implantation. Use of sterile gloves is recommended.
5
Open the pouch and remove the security ring from the syringe. Pull off the cap from the needle without twisting it. If you twist the cap off you may find the needle also twists.
6
Pinch the skin between 1 or 2 fingers and your thumb, on the neck beneath the implantation site and inject the microchip using the other hand.
7
Needle should be completely inserted perpendicularly to the neck, as an intramuscular injection. Press plunger until the ‘click’. Remove needle while applying light pressure to the injection site.
8
Scan the horse to confirm that the microchip is safely in place. If you have used a Thermochip® microchip, you can now read the horse’s temperature!
9
Carefully unscrew the needle from the syringe and dispose of it into a sharps container: treat the needle as medical waste.
