Identification microchips
First ensure that the animal has not been previously microchipped.
1
Scan the animal thoroughly over the neck, on both the left and right sides, following the patterns above, to ensure no microchip is found.
2
Scan the microchip in the sealed pack to verify the 15-digit number matches the barcode label.
3
Open the pouch and remove the security ring from the syringe. Pull off the cap, without twisting it. Twisting the cap during removal may cause the needle to also twist.
4
Pinch the skin between the fingers with one hand. Using the other hand, ensure the bevel is facing you and inject the needle under the skin.
5
Needle should be completely inserted. Press plunger until the ‘click’. Remove needle while applying light pressure to the injection site.
6
Scan the pet to confirm that the microchip is safely in place. If you have used a Thermochip® microchip, you can now read the pet’s temperature!
7
Carefully unscrew the needle from the syringe and dispose of it into a sharps container: treat the needle as medical waste.

Microchipping a cat? Here are some helpful additional recommendations from iCatCare on how to make the process as cat-friendly as possible:
- When possible, implant the microchip when the kitten/cat is anaesthetised or sedated for another procedure e.g. neutering
- If this isn’t possible use distraction techniques to make the experience positive. Have a colleague massage the kitten/cat’s facial glands or try a tasty treat. Always remember to use cat-friendly handling techniques too!
- Use the smallest microchip possible
- If you are struggling or the cat is distressed, don’t be afraid to stop and try again with some sedation or anxiolytics on board
